01 / SERVICES

Asbestos testing.
Hazardous material surveys for NRW.

Every building is different. A useful investigation starts with your plans and a scope of work tailored to them.

01

Site visit & survey

RECORD THE EXISTING BUILDING

Review the building's history and available records, identify suspect materials during a site visit, and define investigation areas for your planned work.

  • Records & building age
  • Site visit
  • Investigation planning
02

Sampling & laboratory analysis

INVESTIGATE & ANALYSE

I handle sampling and laboratory analysis for the agreed investigation. The materials, substances and tests included in the assignment are defined in advance.

  • Sampling
  • Laboratory analysis
  • Material-specific testing
03

Assessment & final report

UNDERSTAND THE RESULTS

I assess the investigation results and bring together locations, materials and laboratory findings in a clear final report focused on your project.

  • Professional assessment
  • Findings linked to locations
  • Final report

Sampling, analysis and the scope of the report are agreed in advance for each project.

THE RIGHT TIME

Understand first.
Then make changes.

An investigation is particularly useful before disturbing existing materials or when you want to clarify a specific concern.

Discuss your plans
01

Alteration & refurbishment

Before work on floor coverings, wall assemblies, adhesives or other existing materials.

02

Dismantling & demolition

To identify relevant materials so they can be taken into account in subsequent planning.

03

Purchase & building assessment

When you want a focused assessment of potential hazardous materials in a property.

04

A suspect material

When a particular building component or material raises questions.

02 / WORKING TOGETHER

A clear process.
From your question to the findings.

The investigation is guided by your question. We agree on the individual steps and the required scope together.

  1. 01

    Understand your project

You describe the building, your planned work and what you need to investigate.

    YOUR QUESTION
  2. 02

    Agree the scope

Available records, accessible areas and relevant materials form the basis of the investigation plan.

03 / EXISTING MATERIALS

Not everything is visible
at first glance.

These examples illustrate typical investigation questions. A material's appearance alone cannot reliably establish whether it contains hazardous substances.

FIBROUS HAZARDOUS MATERIAL

Asbestos

Asbestos may be present in older building products, including plaster, fillers, tile adhesives, floor coverings and asbestos cement.

INVESTIGATION QUESTION

Does the material contain asbestos, and which areas are relevant to the planned work?

Background: German Environment Agency

04 / GOOD TO KNOW

Your questions.
Clearly answered.

The essential information for getting started.

Can you identify asbestos by sight?

Appearance alone is not reliable evidence. The building's age and the type of material can provide clues. A professionally planned investigation with appropriate analysis is needed to clarify a material concern.

Which documents help with the initial discussion?

Useful information includes the year of construction, available plans, details of previous alterations, photographs and a description of the planned work. You can leave unknown details open initially.

Which hazardous substances can be investigated?

The scope depends on the building and the investigation question. In addition to asbestos, PCBs, PAHs or older mineral fibre insulation may be relevant. The tests included in your assignment are agreed in advance.

How much does an investigation cost?

The work involved depends on factors such as building size, accessibility, the number of samples, the analysis and the documentation required. A meaningful cost estimate can be provided once these points have been clarified.

Should I sample a suspect material myself?

Please do not disturb or sample suspect materials yourself. Agree the next steps with a competent professional. Photographs and existing documents are a good starting point.

Does the investigation include remediation?

The investigation examines the existing building and documents the agreed findings. Planning and carrying out remediation are separate services and are agreed separately.
